Narcotics (Greece: narke = solidification) a generic name for the preparations which represses the functions of alive cells temporarily. The conscience, the pain feeling and the tension of muscle are put except circuit temporarily by the paralysis of the central nervous system. Ether, the dinitrogenoxide and halothane count among to the narcotics of inhalation. Narcotics of injection are the ketamine and the barbitones (phenobarbital). An involuntary oral admission takes place with the K.O. drops. The opiates are in the english terminology also called narcotics whereas in Germany and France they didn't (Betäubungsmittel rsp. stupéfiants).

The impact of narcotics is not still clarified. The inhibition of the breathing of cell in the mitochondries is discussed.
